Notice

Please note the FAQs and the requirements for the internship report.

NEW: An application form (see below under "Forms & Applications") is now required for confirmation of a mandatory internship (see FAQ). No letter can be issued without this form.

Attention

Please send internship reports and forms (1&2) digitally (pdf file) to ifkwpraktikum@uni-jena.de. Printed versions are not necessary.

For inquiries about the internship, please contact ifkwpraktikum@uni-jena.de only, so that the inquiries can be processed quickly (not to the personal e-mail address of the internship officer).

FAQ

  • When do I have to submit the report?

The report can be submitted after completion of the internship. There is no deadline, but the processing time should be taken into account if the work has to be completed by a certain date. This is usually six weeks.

  • How long does it take until the score is visible in Friedolin?

Once the report has been submitted, it is checked and graded pass/fail (no grade). The certificate is then sent to the ASPA. This usually takes a total of six weeks, which must be taken into account.

  • Do I have to register/book the internship via Friedolin?

No, a registration is not necessary. The internship is booked when all requirements have been met (forms 1&2 are available, internship has been completed, report has been submitted and graded 'passed').

  • The internship company requires proof that it is a compulsory internship. Is there a corresponding form?

There are two ways to provide evidence of the mandatory internship. For an application, you can first refer to the study regulations that apply to you, which specify the mandatory internship.

If the internship company requires personalized proof, please send the application form (see "Forms & Applications") by email to the internship coordinator. The prerequisite for the issue of the certificate is that you have not yet completed a compulsory internship as part of your studies.

The following documents must be sent to the IfKW internship e-mail address (see below):

    • completed and signed "Antrag Bestätigungsschreiben" (see "Forms & Applications")
    • current certificate of enrollment
  • How should the internship time be recorded on Form 2?

Please state the period (DD.MM.YYYY - DD.MM.YYYY) and the hours worked. Especially for internships that were not completed full-time, the hours are difficult to track otherwise.

  • Who decides whether the internship can be credited?

The internship coordinator will decide on this. If you are unsure whether the internship can be recognized, please clarify this before starting the internship. The internship is not formally accepted until the internship supervisor has signed form 1.

The same applies to internships that have already been completed in the past; here too, possible recognition must be discussed individually with the internship coordinator. The basic condition is that the past internship has never been recognized as an internship achievement/study achievement (e.g. at any other university/university of applied sciences).

Information

  • Overview

The internship provides initial insights into possible professional activities for communication scientists in subject-related institutions (e.g. associations and companies, public institutions, universities). The specific activity is negotiated between the internship supervisor (in the internship company) and the student after consultation with the internship supervisor. Students should apply the theoretical and practical skills acquired during their studies. Students can apply the theoretical and practical skills acquired during their studies to new tasks and communicate work results to the outside world. In the internship report, they demonstrate the competence to present the content and results of their work to outsiders.

The internship is an integral part of the B.A. Communication Studies. The internship is based on the examination and study regulations of the degree program. 10 credit points are awarded for a successful internship. A grade is not awarded. The implementation includes the registration, the confirmation of implementation (with certificate of hours) and an internship report. It is not necessary to register via Friedolin.

  • Duration and type of internship (Bachelor)

Bachelor (old and new study regulations)

The internship must be completed for at least 280 hours (equivalent to 7 weeks for a full-time internship) in an organization/institution and should generally take place during the lecture-free period. It is possible to split up the weeks of the internship.

The internship report (Bachelor's degree) comprises approx. five pages.

There are various internship fields that can be assigned to the different areas of the institute.

Training prior to the degree program can only be partially credited after consultation with the internship supervisor. Student assistant activities in research projects can also be credited proportionately as an internship after consultation. It is advisable not to plan the internship before the third semester.

The internship contract is between the company (employer) and the student (employee), NOT the institute.

  • Duration and type of internship (Master)

Master's in Political Communication (new study regulations from 04.02.2021)

Up to two internships of at least 280 hours each (equivalent to 7 weeks for a full-time internship, 10 ECTS credits each) can be completed in one organization/institution. Alternatively, an internship of at least 560 hours for 20 ECTS can be registered. Please always indicate on Form 1 (Master's new study regulations) how you would like your internship to be credited.

The internship should generally take place during the lecture-free period. It is possible to split the weeks of the internship.

The internship report (Master's program) comprises approx. 8-10 pages for an internship (10 ECTS) or approx. 16 pages for 20 ECTS.

There are various internship fields that can be assigned to the different areas of the institute.

Student assistant activities in research projects can be credited as an internship on a pro rata basis by arrangement.

  • Procedure
    1. The internship must be registered via the institute's internship coordinator using Form 1. It is not necessary to register/register via Friedolin. The internship institution must confirm the internship placement and the time period. With their signature, the student declares that the information provided is correct and that they intend to complete the internship. The internship coordinator confirms the successful registration via form 1. If the internship position is approved, you will not receive any feedback from the internship coordinator of the institute. If you have not received an email 3 weeks after receipt of Form 1, your internship has been approved.
    2. After/during the internship, a five-page internship report (BA) or an 8-10/16-page internship report (MA, see "Duration and type of Master's internship") must be prepared.
    3. Form 2 must be used to confirm the successful completion of the internship (after completion) by the relevant internship institution. The exact number of hours of the internship must be entered under 'Period'.
    4. Please hand in the forms and the internship report to Ms. Junold in the office or send them by email to ifkwpraktikum@uni-jena.de.
    5. The internship supervisor will then decide whether you pass or fail the internship on the basis of the report and, if necessary, an interview. You will only be informed/contacted if you fail the internship. Please note: The complete processing time for the internship report (incl. posting in Friedolin) is 4-6 weeks. Please always allow for this processing time if you need the work to be completed by a certain date. The completion of the internship is not recorded in Friedolin by the internship supervisor.
