  • Admission as a doctorate student

    Doctoral examination regulation as of 17 july 2018 (German readers edition) (Non binding English translationpdf, 483 kb · de)

    1. Registration as a doctorate student in the online program "doc-in"

    Doc-in is the online registration system for doctoral candidates at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. It accompanies you throughout your doctorate.

    Steps to admission:

    1. Log in to doc-inExternal link.
    2. Select "Admission as a doctoral candidate".
    3. doc-in will now guide you through the application step by step.
    4. Print out the form and sign the application.
    5. Hand in the application at the Dean's office of your faculty.

    2. Application as doctorals student

    For the completion of the application you will need the following:

    • the original signed application form
    • the original signed supervision agreement including work plan and timeline  Here is the supervising agreement of the facultydocx, 106 kb · de.
      In case of employment at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, 2 copies are required: 1x for the doctoral file, 1x for the human ressources department.
    • a current curriculum vitae with the presentation of personal and professional history
    • exposé of the dissertation
    • a declaration of current or previous doctoral applications; it must be stated when, with which subject and at which faculty the doctorate was applied for and whether doctoral proceedings were opened or completed. If the doctorate has been completed, a copy of the doctoral certificate shall be submitted.
    • a declaration that the doctoral regulations of the FSV are known
    • a official certified copy of your university degree including transcript of records (if you studied at the University Jena, usually a basic copy is sufficient)
    • If your certificate was not issued not in German or English language: a official certified translation.
    • proof of identity: when submitting your application, please show your ID/passport/electronic residence permit. If you submit your documents via post, please provide a copy. In this case please make sure that information that is not relevant for identification is blackened (e.g. the id number on the electronic residence permit).

    All documents must be completely submitted to the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (regular post or personally).

     

    Attention: Degrees earned at a university abroad may be recognized if they are equivalent to one of the degrees mentioned in subsection. The equivalence shall be examined by the dean based on the agreement on equivalence approved by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (Kultusministerkonferenz, KMK) and the German Rectors’ Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, HRK). The review may take several months.

    3. Admission

    After checking compliance with the requirements, the faculty will decide on your admission as a doctoral candidate. After admission, you will receive an admission letter.

    4. Enrolment as a doctoral candidate (optional)

    Afterwards it is possible to enrol as a doctoral candidate with the Graduate Academy. The enrolment is optional. However, it does offer certain advantages such as the semester ticketExternal link for free use of transportation in and around Jena or a price reduction at the canteens or cafeterias.

    Revocation of admission as doctoral canditate

    According to Article 4 paragraph 10 Allgemeinen Bestimmungen für die Promotionsordnungen der Fakultäten der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jenapdf, 165 kb · de the admission as doctoral student can be revocated.

  • Opening of the doctoral examination procedure

    You must apply for admission as a doctorate student for a doctoral examination at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. This should be done no later than two semesters before applying for the commencement of the examination procedure (for admission as a doctorate student see above).

    Overview of the commencement of a doctoral examination procedure

    1. Request the "information package for the doctoral examination procedure" at the Deans Office in good time.
    2. The doctorate student submits all documents to the Deans Office no later than 14 days before the next Faculty Council meeting (an overview of the meeting dates see above).
    3. The Faculty Council appoints a doctoral committee for carrying out the examination procedure and commences the procedure.
    4. The assessors' reviews are received within eight weeks.
    5. The doctoral committee decides on the acceptance of the dissertation.
    6. A date for the oral examination is scheduled.
    7. The Faculty Council decides on the final mark and completes the examination procedure.
    8. Submission of the compulsory dissertation copies within two years in the library.
    9. The doctoral candidate submits the compulsory dissertation copies to the library and receives the doctorate certificate at the annual degree ceremony in June (Schiller Day).

  • Post-doctorates

    Procedures

    Procedure B (all institutes except Sport Science)

    1. Request the information package for the post-doctorate process from the Deans Office in good time.
    2. The post-doctorate candidate submits all documents no later than 14 days before the next Faculty Council meeting.
    3. The Faculty Council commences the post-doctorate procedure and appoints post-doctorate committee.
    4. The assessors' reviews are received within 12 weeks.
    5. The post-doctorate and reviews are available for all teaching staff in the faculty for four weeks.
    6. Meeting of the committee to discuss acceptance (acceptance of the post-doctorate paper, topic choice and date for the colloquium).
    7. In connection with the public colloquium, the committee judges the candidate's teaching qualification.
    8. The Faculty Council decides on the applicant's teaching qualification and, if applied for, his/her teaching permission.
    9. The post-doctorate candidate submits the compulsory copies of his/her paper to the library.
    10. The post-doctorate candidate holds a public lecture and subsequently receives the certificates for the teaching qualification and, if applicable, teaching permission.

    Procedure A (at the Institute for Sport Science)

    Points 1 to 5 similar to Procedure B

    1. Request the information package for the post-doctorate process from the Deans Office in good time.
    2. The post-doctorate candidate submits all documents no later than 14 days before the next Faculty Council meeting.
    3. The Faculty Council commences the post-doctorate procedure and appoints post-doctorate committee.
    4. The assessors' reviews are received within 12 weeks.
    5. The post-doctorate and reviews are available for all teaching staff in the faculty for four weeks.
    6. Meeting of the committee to discuss acceptance (acceptance of the paper, setting of the date for the colloquium).
    7. In connection with the (public) colloquium, the committee judges whether the work has met requirements, sets a date for the public lecture and selects a topic.
    8. Subsequent to the public lecture, the committee decides on the candidate's teaching qualification.
    9. The Faculty Council decides on the applicant's teaching qualification and, if applied for, his/her teaching permission.
    10. The post-doctorate candidate submits five compulsory copies of his/her work to the library and receives the certificates for his/her teaching qualification and teaching permission at the Deans Office.
