The Politics of IO Authority Transfers

In a new article published in the prestigious Journal of European Public PolicyExternal link, Christian Kreuder-Sonnen and Bernhard Zangl (LMU Munich) analyze the contemporary politics of authority transfers to and from international organizations (IOs).

Since formal, treaty-based authority transfers to IOs have come to standstill in the wake of the politicization of international authority, informal internationalization (e.g. informal empowerment of the European Central Bank) and unilateral renationalization (e.g. Brexit) of authority are on the rise. The article develops a Political Contest Theory to explain how and under which conditions these new types of authority transfers occur.
